Using Recording as a Songwriting Tool

Recording doesn't have to be reserved for that all-important demo. It can be used as a tool to help write the song. I find this approach to be especially helpful when collaborating with another writer.

I sometimes begin recording a song while I'm still in the process of writing it. Today's computer-based recording software programs offer total flexibility for copying, pasting and moving around song parts.

I always start with a basic MIDI drum loop, then add scratch guitar tracks and maybe a vocal melody, all of which will get deleted later. I do this to get an idea of how the song structure will sound.

There are times when I'm not sure if I want the bridge before or after the guitar solo. Maybe the second pre-chorus shouldn't be as long as the first.

Nothing is set in stone!

I have the freedom of moving stuff around to preview the changes without destroying the original files!

Oftentimes I am still fine-tweaking the lyrics and phrasing as I do this.

Once I've decided on the structure, I set about recording the real drum parts and replacing the scratch guitar and vocal with the keeper tracks.

This way, the writing project I've been working on becomes the actual demo.

Most of the songs I write are finished before I ever press the record button. But then there are those stubborn songs that demand to be heard before they allow me to finish writing them!
