Best Songwriting Books
Here is a list of some of the best and most popular songwriting books available. I’ve included some of my favourites. Any one of them will help you to become a better songwriter, not just because of all of the useful inside tips, but also by the simple virtue of remaining focused on the task at hand. Each time I decide to read a book on songwriting it renews my passion for the craft and I write a couple of songs that maybe I wouldn‘t have thought of writing. It opens me up to new ideas and makes me think in ways I’m not accustomed to. I bet it will do the same for you too.
The Craft and Business of Songwriting by John Braheny This is one of my favourite songwriting books. It covers not only the creative aspect of being a songwriter, but the business side too. Perfect for beginners and working songwriters alike, The Craft and Business of Songwriting features dozens of exercises, examples and anecdotes from successful songwriters including Vince Gill, Sheryl Crow, and Paul McCartney. With all this and more, readers will find the insider secrets they need to make them more competitive in a crowded marketplace.
The Songwriter's Idea Book by Sheila Davis 40 Strategies to Excite Your Imagination, Help You Design Distinctive Songs, and Keep Your Creative Flow. This is an extremely popular book on songwriting. It reveals the inherent relationship between personality type, brain function and writing style. Includes 40 proven songwriting strategies - guaranteed to spark songwriters' imaginations.
Songwriters on Songwriting by Paul Zollo This expanded fourth edition of Songwriters on Songwriting includes ten new interviews - with Alanis Morissette, Lenny Kravitz, Lou Reed and others. In these pages, sixty-two of the greatest songwriters of our time go straight to the source of the magic of songwriting by offering their thoughts, feelings and opinions on their art.
Songwriting and the Creative Process by Steve Gillette Another one of my favourite songwriting books, Songwriting and The Creative Process contains tips and easy-to-understand instructional sections on melody, harmony, song structure, rhythm, lyrics, titles and "hooks." Plus, tips and hints from pros like Graham Nash, Tom Paxton and others.
How to Write a Hit Song by Molly-Ann Leikin This book is an absolute joy to read!
